After the Prophet

After the Prophet: The Epic Story of the Shia Sunni Split

This book was written by Lesley Hazleton, a non-Muslim British researcher. In this piece, she aims to review the history of Shia and Sunni Muslims from a purely objective and pragmatic perspective. The thirteenth chapter of this book is around twenty pages, and it focuses on exploring the narrative of Karbala and the oppression that led to the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him).

It must be noted that we do not agree with everything that is presented in this book. Nonetheless, hearing the history of Islam through the words of a researcher who doesn’t support a particular Islamic sect has its own educational merit. This chapter is certain to move readers, regardless of whether they are Shia, Sunni, or non-Muslim. While examining historical documentation, one cannot help but think about how to thank God for having placed Hussain (peace be upon him) as our honorable Imam.
